Civic Imperatives

Nancy Thomas, Institute for Democracy & Higher Education, Tufts University’s Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life

Increasing Student Political Learning and Participation in Democracy – Colleges and universities have long been responsible for educating not just for the jobs of the future, but for civic responsibility. It’s a big job, one that should connect civic learning, student well-being, expressive freedoms, equity and inclusion, information literacy, activism and leadership, voting, and community engagement. Too big for any one department, this agenda requires a skilled coalition of faculty, staff, students, and others. In this keynote address, Nancy Thomas from the Institute for Democracy in Higher Education at Tufts University’s Tisch College will make the case for connecting these dots and mobilizing an influential coalition of change agents on campus.
